Conductor Auditions

Thank you for your interest in the Assistant Conductor role with the Saybrook College Orchestra! Composed mostly of Yale undergraduates from all majors and fields, SYO has from its inception been committed to programming ambitious and accessible concerts presented free of charge. Highlights from recent performances include Beethoven’s Second Symphony, the Dvorak Cello Concerto, Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony, and John Williams’ Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.

The group rehearses each Friday from 3:30 to 6:00 in the Saybrook Underbrook. Please ensure your availability for this time slot throughout the ‘17 – ‘18 academic year before signing up to audition. In order to sign up, please e-mail your musical resume and a short statement of interest to by Wednesday, April 19.

For the audition, you will have 10 minutes to direct the orchestra during our April 21 rehearsal. You will be working with the group on the second movement of Beethoven’s 7th Symphony. We will be looking at your technical ability, musical knowledge, leadership qualities, character, preparedness, and all other traits that would make a conductor one whom we would like to have on board moving forward. Finalists will be given next steps the following week.

We’ll see you on April 21!
